Our Vision

'St. Joseph's Catholic School is a Christian community dedicated to helping our children integrate a personalized faith in Christ with the need to be a fruitful and loyal citizen of Aotearoa New Zealand.

As we educate our children spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and socially, we do our utmost to help them grow in self-esteem and sensitivity - appreciating not only their own dignity but the dignity of others.'

Our History

Our school was founded in 1902 through the efforts of Fr Brodie, and the Sisters of Mercy. The motto they chose for the school was "Semper Fidelis", which translates as "Ever Faithful" and refers to both loyalty and perseverance. So, just as the founders of the Parish school strived to be ever faithful in all manner of ways to their mission, to the people, to Christ: so too we as a school strive to be ever faithful to Learning, to Christ and to Love: (doing what is best for others).

Our school has an excellent reputation for high standards and is known for its keen sense of community and 'family feel'.

ERO said this about us in February 2010

"The school’s special Catholic character is strongly reflected throughout the school.  Trustees and staff work hard to ensure that this special character is reflected in the school’s charter, in key values such as love and respect for others and in school events and ceremonies.  This special character is contributing to the sense of inclusion, family atmosphere and community belonging that is evident in the school.

Teaching is of a very high standard.  Teachers use a wide range of effective classroom strategies which are clearly matched to the learning needs of students.  High learning and behaviour expectations for students contribute to good levels of engagement and achievement.  Students are motivated, enthusiastic and focused learners.

Strong and supportive relationships at all levels contribute to a positive and purposeful school environment. Students respect and care for each other as they assist the learning of others. Teachers praise and reinforce positive learning and behaviour, model Catholic values and encourage supportive relationships for the benefit of students. The values of respect and cooperation are evident in the way students interact and learn in a safe and supportive environment."
